IKEA furniture is well known for its modern, utilitarian design. Also, because much of it is self-assembly furniture (also known as "flat-pack"), it is designed to be assembled by the consumer rather than being sold pre-assembled.

In an Influential Fashion
Greenwood Press | 2002-03-30 | ISBN: 0313312206 | 328 pages | PDF | 1,6 MB

In an Influential Fashion profiles 164 fashion designers and retailers from many countries who have had the most impact on American dress and culture from the late 19th century to the year 2000. Each entry introduces a fashion personality or retailer whose influence on the industry reflected societal, political, and/or economic change.

The commercial side of fashion, neglected in most fashion encyclopedias, is explored here, with details of licensing agreements and marketing innovations not easily found elsewhere. Students and professionals in fashion design, retailing, costume research, and social history will all find this book a valuable addition to their libraries. Each entry includes the birth and death dates of designers, their education and training, career highlights and accomplishments, and awards they have won. The entry describes the designer or retailer's signature styles, with a keen emphasis on the designer's contributions to American fashion design and culture. As appropriate, the entry summarizes any licensing agreements and influential marketing innovations. Web sites, lists of museums and fashion design schools, and numerous appendices make In an Influential Fashion a complete resource on American fashion history for the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion, 3-vol. set
edited by Valerie Steele
Charles Scribner's Sons | ISBN 0684313944 | 2004 | 1600 pages | PDF | 39.8 MB or 14.4+13.1+12.3

From diapers to Dior, saris to serapes, the world of clothing is nearly as vast and as ancient as the human race. Tracing the stylistic and functional threads that unite clothing across time and cul-tures C as well as delving into the divergent styles and significance of apparel C this A to Z encyclopedia is the essential resource for exploring the relationship between culture and couture.

This broad-based set surveys clothing, body adornment, and examines the origins of clothing, the development of fabrics and technologies, and the social meanings of dress. It also presents information on representative costumes from a wide variety of historical eras, which are frequently the topic of student research. Topics range from the bustle, sari, and toga to Polyester and body piercing. The short entries explain the history of garments (necktie, codpiece, cocktail dress, bathing suit, burqua, Nehru jacket), techniques and manufactures (batik, dry cleaning, zipper, stone washing), body adornment (makeup, mask, tattoo, wig), and important persons and institutions (Coco Chanel, Edith Head, Yves Saint-Laurent, Fashion Institute of Technology). The longer essays provide cultural context: class, gender, sumptuary laws, costume design for stage and screen, advertising; fashion careers; ecclesiastical dress; military uniforms; etc.

The set includes a comprehensive general index in the last volume, a timeline, and a topical outline. From the secondary school student writing a paper on dress among Native Americans to the university student interested in the underpinnings of clothing design, this set represents a unique and valuable source.

Elegant little volume. This handsome little paperback features excellent photographs of some of the period costumes preserved in the Kyoto Costume Institute, in Japan. Details of embroidery, and accoutrements like hats and camisoles, etc., are remarkable. The exquisite garments range in date from the lavish era of Marie Antoinette through the late 20th century, and include pieces from major couture houses still active today. All in all, a nice selection of works from the Institute's collection. Readers wishing to see additional costumes should access the Institute's web site, which is available in both Japanese and English.

Thanks to his book FRUITS (more than 100,000 copies sold worldwide), Shoichi Aoki’s street magazine Fruits is now better known abroad than in Japan. The magazine with an almost cult-like following in Japan has been documenting Tokyo street fashion since 1996.”
“Aoki first started documenting street fashion in London in the mid 80’s. “I taught myself how to take photographs from books. At the time Japanese fashion wasn’t free at all. The normal street fashion in the UK was free and really cool.” Inspired by the free street fashion of London the young Aoki decided he wanted to do something about Japanese staleness. “In Japan there was not a single magazine that showed the London style of street fashion. I figured that if I would introduce that kind of fashion to Japan things would change. I also saw the clothes as art and I wanted to preserve a record of this ’street art’”.
To show the Japanese kids this ‘free street art’ of London, Aoki started Street magazine in 1985. It sold well and introduced the street fashion idea to tens of thousands of Japanese teenagers.”
“In the early to mid 90’s things were beginning to change in Japan. The Harajuku area in Tokyo had its main thoroughfare closed off on Sundays and this was attracting more and more bands and show offs. The ‘pedestrian heaven’ (hokoten) as it was called became a laboratory and incubation center for new trends in music and fashion. “In Japan everybody had always dressed the same. Whatever was popular was worn by everyone. Everybody would wear Comme des Garçons or Ivy or whatever brand was ‘in’. But suddenly Harajuku became free. People started to feel that it was cool to coordinate your own clothes. Harajuku fashion became really interesting and fun. […] To record this creative explosion of fashion, Aoki started up a second magazine, Fruits. Fruits almost exclusively focused on these wild Harajuku trends.”
