Buffet Script Open-type Script Font | 2 Mb

“Buffet Script” is based on fantastic calligraphy by Alf Becker, arguably the greatest American sign lettering artist of all time.
The series of nameless alphabets created by Becker and published by Sign of the Times magazine in 1941 have attracted typeface digitizers for years. It’s a wonder that several of these alphabets are still undigitized.
It’s also understandable that the basis for “Buffet Script” was not attempted in digital form until now. The page presenting the original Becker alphabet shows a jumble of letters running into each other, swashes intertwined. There is a massive amount of work involved in digitizing such lettering and scanning is not an option. If anyone was going to attempt this particular alphabet, it would have to be redrawn stroke by stroke, and curve by curve.

The challenge was not the main attraction. In a way, the Becker approach to lettering is so far and away from digital that you are forced to work out the possibilities and letter combinations on your own. Part of the process is solving problems presented by the scant typographic showings. However, after a few imaginative visualizations, the digital potential becomes clear in the mind. The eye and hand follow.

The end result with “Buffet Script” is an enormous font with a lot of alternates and ligatures. The end result particularly shines because it includes some of the most fascinating, flowing calligraphy ever seen. Calligraphy is where all of the extra touches - such as alternates, swashes, and ligatures - raises the typeface to a higher aesthetic level.

The OpenType programming for “Buffet Script” contains discretionary ligatures, stylistic and contextual alternates, all interacting with each other to allow the composition of just the typographic look and feel. This font is best used where lush elegance is a design requirement.

About the Designer
Alejandro Paul teaches graphic design and typography at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. He has worked as an art director in prestigious Argentina-based studios, handling high-profile corporate brands such as Arcor, Marta Harff, Morph, SC Johnson, Danone, and Movicom. He has walked away with awards from several design competitions and is also a typeface designer for T26. He is one of the founders of the Sudtipos project, the first Argentinean type foundry collective.

"Whomp" OpenType Script Font & User's Guide | 1,6 Mb

"Whomp" takes its inspiration from the work of an American master in sign painting and alphabet manipulation: Alf Becker. In 1932, Becker began designing a series of alphabets to be published in Signs of the Times magazine at the rate of one alphabet per month. Nine years later, 100 of those alphabets were compiled in one book that became an enormous success among sign painters.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many Alf Becker alphabets were digitized with blurbs that falsely credit them as "an Alf Becker typeface". Alf Becker was not really a typeface kind of guy. He was more of a calligrapher and sign painter. His alphabets were either incomplete or full of variations on different letters, and didn't become typefaces until the digital era.

This particular Becker alphabet was quite incomplete. In fact, it wasn't a showing of an alphabet, but a few words on a poster. Alejandro Paul took the challenge of drawing, digitizing, restructuring, and finally building a complete usable typeface from that partial alphabet.

Through the wonderful possibilities of OpenType, "Whomp" comes with more than 100 alternates, tons of swashy endings and ligatures, all accessible through OpenType palettes in programs that support such features. This is the in-your-face kind of font that pays direct homage to the vision of this great American artist.

About the Designer
Alejandro Paul teaches graphic design and typography at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. He has worked as an art director in prestigious Argentina-based studios, handling high-profile corporate brands such as Arcor, Marta Harff, Morph, SC Johnson, Danone, and Movicom. He has walked away with awards from several design competitions and is also a typeface designer for T26. He is one of the founders of the Sudtipos project, the first Argentinean type foundry collective.

Robert Altemus, a New York based artist, has more than twenty years of experience in art direction, publication design, typography and illustration. The recipient of well over a hundred and fifty national design, illustration and typographic awards.
He has art directed such magazines as Family Weekly, The New York Daily News, Nostalgia, Penthouse, Splice, US, and The Washingtonian. Altemus has also designed magazines for various entertainment projects including Blade Runner, Gremlins, Back To The Future, Mad Max, all three Batman films, and The X-Files TV show.

Altemus has been actively involved in computer systems consulting for clients including Newsweek and Rolling Stone. He has been actively involved in teaching, and has conducted workshops on magazine redesign, start-ups and desktop publishing. As a former president of the Society of Publication Designers, he organized and co-chaired Zine 2000 (a one-day conference on editorial design for the Internet) with Roger Black.

The review of immeasurable qualities is tricky. How does one measure aesthetic quality, the benefit of an item, its value to humanity? How does one determine a list of the best fonts of all time? We tried to do this by using on objective and two subjective measurement patters weighted as follows:
FontShop Sales Figures: 40%
Historical Value/Meaning: 30%
Aesthetic Qualities: 30%

The evaluation consisted exclusively of licensed or ‘commercial’ fonts. Free fonts or operating system fonts were not considered, nor were fonts integral to standard software (i.e. Arial, Verdana, etc.). Font variations, which over the centuries have been individually interpreted by various Foundries, were uniquely evaluated as a class and the best variant was entered into the main judging process.

---------------------------------
The Identikal Foundry was founded in London by Identical twin brothers Adam and Nick Hayes. It was the summer of 1998 and after the use of one of their earlier typeface designs in Loaded Fashion, the brothers decided to release a full font collection. This first collection gained Identikal recognition in the world's design and type communities, helping build the foundations of the foundry as we know it today. Identikal has since become a well established, and internationally renowned type foundry, that is respected worldwide.

The Identikal Foundry has outputted more than 450 fonts in around 8 collections, including many inventive typefaces that have inspired the world of typeface design. The collection is popular within a variety of different mediums including: Publications, TV media, Multimedia, Advertising campaigns and design for print.

Since 2003 The Identikal Foundry has been based in New York City where the brothers continue to output original and futuristic style typefaces.
